BISFed received good news following today’s meeting of the International Paralympic Committee’s Global Board in Abu Dhabi.
In total (i.e. for all 22 summer sports), the IPC has negotiated an additional 50 athlete slots in Tokyo (as compared with Rio.) Of these, Boccia has been allocated additional 8 slots, meaning that there will be 116 boccia athletes in Tokyo.
Speaking from Abu Dhabi where he is attending the IPC’s General Assembly, BISFed President David Hadfield said: “I am delighted with this outcome which follows partly as a result of our efforts to grow boccia around the world. One of our main objectives is to give more opportunities to more athletes, and I am already looking forward to seeing new athletes competing in Tokyo. We will now work with the IPC to finalise the qualifying criteria for Tokyo as soon as possible.”
